Background
Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease caused by dengue virus, DENV. DENV belongs to Flaviviridae family and apparently exists as a complex of four serotypes (DENV-1, 2, 3 and 4). DENV is endemic in more than 120 countries of tropical and subtropical zones. The viral envelope glycoprotein (E protein) is thought to be responsible for the initial viral attachment to cells and for mediating cellular entry of the virus. The E protein is responsible for causing hemagglutination, infectivity, antibody neutralization, and enhancement of Fc receptor-bearing cells. The E glycoprotein is the principal component of the external surface of the DENV virion and is a dominant target of the response consisting of antibodies against DENV. E protein is divided into three functional domains, termed domains I, II and III. Domain III is responsible for binding to the receptor molecules present on the host cell membrane.
